fundamentals of project management

Could you imagine what an airport would be like without an air traffic controller? Well, it’s pretty much what meeting a deadline would be without good project management…

Every business has projects with tight deadlines and limited resources. With the current economy as it is, these deadlines and budget restrictions are only set to increase. This makes knowing and practicing the fundamentals of project management necessary to succeed and meet deadlines.

For starters, you need to be organised and know how to prioritise. This will make project scheduling a less daunting task and one that will make your life and job a lot easier! Another pillar of project management is being smart with your time. Effective time management is an important factor when dealing with deadlines. If you know what you need to achieve and how much time you have to achieve it, you can break it into smaller, more manageable chunks.

"Don’t find fault, find a remedy"
Henry Ford

This quote is applicable to project management. This is because often, there isn’t much time to dwell on faults, and with a looming deadline, one must strive to find solutions, fast! An efficient combination of problem-solving and time management is the very DNA of successful project managers, but another skill is the most important one of all… Costing.

If you’re good with budgets and making the most of available resources, then you are almost there! Good project managers are those who keep project costs where they should be, allowing jobs to be completed on time and within budget!
